Washington, D.C. – The family of Irish teacher Enoch Burke staged a protest outside the White House during Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin’s visit to the United States. Burke’s parents, Martina and Sean, along with his two siblings, participated in the demonstration on Thursday evening, though Enoch Burke himself was not present.
The protest featured placards with slogans such as “America Needs to Know the Truth About Ireland” and another displaying Burke’s image alongside a message highlighting his imprisonment. One sign specifically targeted the Irish Prime Minister, reading, “Micheál Martin is Denying Freedom to Christians in Ireland.” However, the protesters refused to engage with reporters and did not respond to questions.
The Burke family’s presence in Washington, D.C., coinciding with Martin’s high-profile visit, fuelled widespread speculation. Online rumours suggested that the family might attempt to attend the annual Shamrock Ceremony at the White House. These speculations were intensified by support for Burke from Elon Musk, who has openly criticised the Irish government’s handling of the case on social media.
However, Prime Minister Martin downplayed any impact the protest might have on his visit, stating, “I am here to represent the Irish government and the Irish people. There is important work to be done, and that is my focus.”
The Controversy Surrounding Enoch Burke
Enoch Burke, a former teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath, Ireland, became the centre of national controversy in 2022 after refusing to address a transgender student by their preferred name and pronouns, citing his Christian beliefs that recognise only male and female genders.
His refusal led to a series of escalating incidents, resulting in his suspension from the school and, ultimately, his dismissal. Despite this, Burke continued to defy court orders barring him from entering the school, leading to his imprisonment for 106 days for contempt of court.
The case has sparked intense debate in Ireland, with supporters arguing for religious freedom and free speech, while critics view his actions as defiance of lawful court orders and a refusal to comply with basic anti-discrimination policies.
