EU Expert Panel to Examine Potential Social Media Age Restrictions

Dublin: An expert group established by the European Union will begin deliberations this week on the possibility of introducing age restrictions for social media use, with recommendations expected by the summer.

The initiative, launched by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will assess additional measures to strengthen online protections for children. Brussels is considering setting a minimum access age, following Australia’s move to require major platforms to remove accounts held by users under 16 or face substantial fines.

Several member states, including France, Denmark, Greece and Spain, are advocating for EU-wide action. The Irish Government has also signalled its support for exploring age limits at European level, while indicating it may pursue domestic measures if necessary.
