Brussels: The European Union has issued a warning emphasising the importance of stockpiling essential survival kits that can sustain individuals for at least 72 hours in the event of a conflict or natural disaster. EU Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib has urged all EU citizens and residents to plan ahead for self-sufficiency during emergencies.
Essential Preparedness Measures
Lahbib advised that critical supplies such as non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights, matches, and essential identification documents should be securely stored in waterproof pouches to ensure their protection.
Beyond individual preparedness, the EU is also working to enhance strategic resilience by acquiring:
- Firefighting aircraft
- Medical equipment
- Energy and transportation resources
- Defensive capabilities to address chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats
Scandinavian Model and Policy Inspiration
The EU’s warning follows recommendations from a report submitted to the European Commission last year by former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. It also draws inspiration from Scandinavian countries, where Finland, Sweden, and Denmark have implemented strong national preparedness measures to equip citizens for potential crises.
“Europe is facing more complex and interconnected threats than ever before. It is crucial that people understand what actions to take in emergencies and remain prepared for different scenarios. Effective preparedness can also help prevent widespread panic,” Lahbib stated.
