Dublin: The High Court has appointed liquidators to EuroGeneral Limited and Bushgrove Limited, the companies operating the EuroGiant discount retail chain, placing around 640 jobs across 77 stores nationwide under threat.
The retailer, which has traded for more than 30 years, cited rising rents, higher operating costs and intensifying competition as key factors behind the decision. Despite the court-appointed liquidation, EuroGiant stores will continue trading for now while a full review of the network is carried out.
Mark Degnan and Brendan O’Reilly of Interpath have been appointed to oversee the liquidation process. In a statement, the company thanked staff for their long service and dedication, acknowledging the uncertainty now facing employees.
Founder Charlie O’Loughlin, who established EuroGiant as a single store on Dublin’s Moore Street in 1990, described the development as a “very hard day” and apologised to staff, saying his priority is to support an orderly wind-down and achieve the best possible outcome for workers.
