Cork: The family of Deepa Dinamani, who was tragically murdered by her husband, Regin Rajan, continues to struggle with the profound pain and devastation left in the wake of her death. During a sentencing hearing, Deepa’s brother, Ullas Dinamani, addressed the Central Criminal Court via video link, describing the immeasurable sorrow and trauma his family has endured since the incident.
“There are no words to truly convey the depth of our pain,” Ullas told the court. “The loss of Deepa has left an irreparable wound in our lives. I don’t know if we will ever fully recover.”
Regin Rajan (41) was convicted last month and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife. The crime took place at their home in Wilton, Cork, on July 14, 2023. Deepa (38), a senior manager at an international financial firm, had moved to Cork with her husband and five-year-old son in March 2023 to take up a new position.
Although her professional life was flourishing, Deepa’s marriage was marred by growing conflict. The relationship had deteriorated to the point where the couple were living in separate rooms. When Deepa expressed her desire for a divorce, Rajan refused. Their disputes escalated, culminating in a fatal confrontation.
On the evening of the murder, Rajan informed Gardaí and friends that he had killed his wife. However, during the trial, he retracted his confession and claimed her death was unintentional. The court, rejecting his defence, ruled that the killing was premeditated and that Rajan had sought to defame his wife’s character.
The court unanimously found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison.
Ullas shared that Deepa was not only a beloved sister but also a guiding light and best friend. “Her absence haunts us every single day. Our home is filled with silence, sorrow, and memories that remind us of what we lost.”
He described the unbearable grief of their elderly parents, particularly their mother, who cries daily and finds no peace. Their father, once a pillar of strength, has been emotionally shattered. The sight of Deepa’s young son, now motherless, brings fresh anguish. “How do we replace a mother’s love?” Ullas asked. “The joy has been stripped from our lives. There are no birthdays, no celebrations—just endless mourning.”
