Cork: A Cork-based family has discreetly returned home after claiming Ireland’s largest-ever Lotto jackpot, choosing to remain anonymous and grounded despite their extraordinary win. Still coming to terms with their windfall—reportedly an estimated €120 million—the family says they intend to stay in Ireland and continue their lives without any drastic changes.
“We’re still in disbelief,” said one family member. “It’s life-changing, of course, but we’re determined not to let it change who we are.”
The Winning Moment
The winning ticket was purchased at Clifford’s Centre on Shandon Street in Cork City. A family member, who had occasionally skipped recent draws, decided to buy a ticket just in time. On the night of the draw, after hearing on RTÉ that the winning ticket was sold in Ireland, he scanned his ticket using the National Lottery app.
“A message popped up saying, ‘You’ve won big—contact the National Lottery.’ I scanned it at least four times before I could believe it. Then I woke my wife and we checked the numbers together—over and over.”
Unable to sleep, the family member said he wrapped the winning ticket in white paper and hid it safely among folded laundry in their bedroom.
“I must have thanked God at least ten times. But my eyes were wide open all night. The minutes felt like hours.”
Keeping It Quiet, Planning Carefully
After confirming the win, the family chose to keep the news private while seeking independent legal and financial advice. They took several days to process the shock before quietly claiming their prize. Daily life continued as usual, with a focus on discretion and responsibility.
“We didn’t want to rush into anything. We wanted to make thoughtful decisions that reflect our values.”
Travel, Charity, and a Long-Dreamed-Of Watch
With a shared passion for travel, the family’s first major decision is to take long-awaited holidays. They also plan to support their children, grandchildren, close friends, and a number of charities that are close to their hearts.
One family member shared a personal anecdote about finally fulfilling a lifelong dream:
“I’ve always wanted a Rolex, but I never thought I’d afford one. When I saw the price last week, it still felt out of reach. After the win, I asked my wife what she thought. She smiled and said, ‘You can get it now—you’re not just a dreamer anymore.’”
It’s understood that the husband and wife formally claimed the prize with additional family members named in the process. While details remain private, this approach may have been taken to maximise benefits and manage the funds more effectively.
