Dublin: Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway has formally resigned from the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party following his recent arrest for assault. The incident, which occurred on January 22, had not been previously disclosed to the party. Conway, who was re-elected last week to the Administrative Panel in the Seanad, announced his resignation amid growing scrutiny.
Details of the Incident
Senator Conway, who represents County Clare, was arrested on Dublin’s O’Connell Street after being found in a sedated state, reportedly due to a combination of sleeping pills and alcohol. He was subsequently taken into custody at Store Street Garda Station and released shortly afterward. The senator admitted he had not informed Fine Gael of the incident at the time.
In a public statement, Conway acknowledged his failure to disclose the matter, describing it as a serious error in judgment.
“I deeply regret my actions and sincerely apologize to my family, colleagues, supporters, and my nominating body, Vision Ireland. I also extend my apologies to An Garda Síochána for any inconvenience caused,” Conway stated.
Party Response and Possible Disciplinary Action
Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon welcomed Conway’s swift resignation and his public apology, describing it as an appropriate response under the circumstances. Fine Gael also issued an official statement confirming Conway’s resignation from the parliamentary party and acknowledging his apology.
“The matter has been formally noted, and the party is currently reviewing the situation to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted,” the statement read.
Martin Conway has served in the Seanad Éireann for over 14 years, having first been elected in 2011. He holds the distinction of being the first visually impaired member of an Oireachtas parliamentary committee, earning respect for his advocacy on disability rights and social inclusion.
