Dublin: Fine Gael has suspended Councillor Poonam Rane, representing Kimmage-Rathmines, for six months following remarks made during a Dublin City Council meeting in October 2024 that were deemed offensive to the Jewish community and the State of Israel.
The party’s disciplinary committee concluded that Rane’s comments constituted a serious breach of acceptable standards and warranted suspension of both party membership and privileges. The decision also comes amid broader criticism of Fine Gael’s previously delayed responses to internal disciplinary matters.
Rane had made comments during a debate on a resolution related to the Occupied Territories Bill, in which she alleged that Israeli Jews control the U.S. economy and media—rhetoric widely condemned as antisemitic. She further claimed that U.S. inaction regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza was the result of Jewish influence over American politics and economics.
The remarks triggered immediate backlash from across the political spectrum, with Fine Gael leader Simon Harris issuing a strong condemnation. The party has since recommended that Rane issue a formal retraction and apology, as well as undergo appropriate sensitivity and anti-discrimination training.
Although Rane issued a public apology the day after the controversy erupted—stating that her views were misguided and fully withdrawn—the party concluded that disciplinary measures were necessary to uphold its standards of conduct.
This development comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity surrounding Middle East policy and Ireland’s stance on international conflicts. It also reflects Fine Gael’s efforts to reinforce accountability within its ranks as international relations and public discourse continue to evolve.
