Dublin: Fingal County Council has announced plans to construct an additional 5,000 homes over the next three years, in line with government directives aimed at increasing housing supply.
The move raises the overall housing target in the county from 35,000 to 40,000 homes and follows the formal approval of the updated Fingal Development Plan. The council confirmed that the expansion is supported by revised residential zoning and follows extensive public consultation and detailed planning discussions.
A central component of the strategy is the development of the Dunsink area, located between Fingal and Blanchardstown. The council had previously unveiled plans to redevelop more than 1,000 acres of land in this region, with Dunsink expected to deliver approximately 2,500 homes in the short term—making it the single largest contributor to the new housing supply.
According to Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly, Fingal currently has 852 hectares of zoned residential land, including 164 hectares in Dunsink and a further 225 hectares designated as strategic reserve. These lands are expected to play a key role in meeting future housing demand.
In addition to Dunsink, a further 2,500 homes will be developed across several locations, including Barnhill, Clonsilla, Balrothery, Skerries, Lusk, Malahide, Kinsealy, and Clongriffin. The council noted that these areas are well-served by public transport and community infrastructure, making them suitable for residential expansion.
Mayor Tom O’Leary described the initiative as a significant step toward addressing the housing needs of a growing and diverse population. Meanwhile, Planning Director Roisin Burke stated that the updated zoning framework balances housing delivery with environmental protection considerations.
