Dublin: Petrol and diesel prices in Ireland are climbing sharply, ending a three-month period of relative stability. Despite a decline in crude oil prices to approximately $72 (€68) per barrel, petrol prices have increased by two cents to €1.73 per litre, while diesel now stands at €1.67 per liter. This paradox has raised concerns about the financial strain on households as the cost of living continues to rise.
Impact of Carbon Tax and Market Factors
The recent budget’s increase in the carbon tax on motor fuels has significantly contributed to the surge in prices. The tax hike has added 2.1 cents to the price of petrol and 2.5 cents to diesel, placing Ireland among the highest in Europe for fuel taxes.
Industry experts warn that the upward trend may continue. Justin Doyle, a specialist at Dublin Investec, notes that speculation about U.S. President Donald Trump potentially resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict could drive global oil prices higher. Currently, European nations, including Ireland, rely on oil purchased through Asian intermediaries.
Currency and Global Dynamics
The strengthening U.S. dollar against the euro is exacerbating the situation, as Ireland imports fuel priced in dollars. The euro is trading at a low of 1.0550 against the dollar, increasing the cost of imports.
Jennifer Kilduff, head of marketing and PR at AA Ireland, described the price hikes as a significant blow to motorists. Industry group Fuels for Ireland has urged the government to establish an expert panel to explore tax reforms aimed at alleviating the burden on consumers.
Post-U.S. Election Market Uncertainty
The volatility in global oil markets following the U.S. presidential election has added to the uncertainty. Donald Trump, known for his pro-oil stance, is expected to lift restrictions on new oil and gas exploration on federal lands when he resumes office. His potential policies, including trade tariffs on China, could disrupt global economic growth and impact oil demand, further destabilising fuel markets.
