Dublin: An Garda Síochána has confirmed that protesters opposing fuel price increases were cleared from O’Connell Street following a large-scale operation carried out in the early hours of this morning.
The long-hour operation resulted in the street’s main thoroughfare being brought under full Garda control, although some agricultural vehicles remain in place. The area had been the focal point of sustained demonstrations over the past four days.
A significant security cordon—described as a “ring of steel”—was established around the city centre by approximately 6am, marking the conclusion of the operation. Gardaí moved in after crowds that had gathered in support of protesters dispersed around midnight, allowing officers to secure the place with minimal resistance.
The coordinated operation involved uniformed and plainclothes Gardaí, the Public Order Unit, and mounted units. Additional support included increased patrols by the Garda Water Unit along the River Liffey and aerial surveillance by helicopter.
Tow trucks and specialised teams were deployed to remove obstructions, with illegally parked vehicles cleared in phases. Some vehicles were clamped, while drivers were instructed to move their vehicles immediately or face legal consequences. Garda sources confirmed that enforcement action was taken in cases of non-compliance.
While traffic has begun to resume in parts of the city centre, authorities have stated that certain restrictions will remain in place. A heightened Garda presence continues, with enhanced monitoring and checkpoints at key entry points to prevent further disruption.
Gardaí have indicated they will remain on high alert amid concerns that similar protests could escalate again. Meanwhile, representatives of the protest movement have warned that the government’s approach risks further intensifying tensions.
