Panaji: After an eight-year-long legal battle, a District and Sessions Court in South Goa has found Vikat Bhagat (31), a local resident, guilty of the rape and murder of Irish national Danielle McLaughlin (28).
A Long-Awaited Verdict
The painful wait for justice has finally ended for Danielle’s family, particularly her mother, Andrea Brannigan, and sister, Jolene McLaughlin Brannigan, from Donegal, Ireland. The case had seen numerous legal obstacles and delays, making the verdict an emotional and long-awaited moment for the family.
“Justice Has Been Served”
In a heartfelt statement, Andrea Brannigan and Jolene McLaughlin Brannigan expressed relief and gratitude towards the Indian judicial system, stating that they were convinced Bhagat was solely responsible for the crime.
While the loss of Danielle remains immeasurable, they found some solace in the verdict. They also visited the location where Danielle spent her final days, describing it as an important part of their journey toward healing.
The family extended their sincere appreciation to their legal representatives, Goa-based lawyer Vikram Verma and advocate Desmond Doherty, as well as the public prosecutors and investigators who worked on the case.

Due to the trial taking place thousands of miles away, the case presented significant logistical challenges for the family. However, their commitment to seeking justice never wavered.
Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Simon Harris, praised the family for their resilience throughout the ordeal. In a statement, he acknowledged the role of Ireland’s Foreign Office, the UK authorities, the Embassy in New Delhi, and the Consulate General in Mumbai in ensuring a fair and just outcome.
Case Background: The Tragic Murder of Danielle McLaughlin
Danielle McLaughlin, a British-Irish national, was found raped and murdered near Palolem Beach in Canacona, South Goa, on March 14, 2017. A local farmer discovered her body in a field, covered in blood with severe head and facial injuries.
Originally from Buncrana, Donegal, Danielle had travelled to Goa for a holiday with a friend in February 2017. She was a former student at Liverpool John Moores University and had previously volunteered at an orphanage in India. She returned to the country with aspirations of studying yoga.
On the night before her murder, Danielle attended a Holi party near the beach. Within hours of her body being discovered, Vikat Bhagat, a local acquaintance, was arrested in connection with the crime.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that she had been raped and murdered, with the cause of death being brain injuries and asphyxiation.
The verdict marks a crucial step toward justice for Danielle McLaughlin and her family. While nothing can undo the tragic loss, the conviction brings some degree of peace and closure to those who have fought tirelessly for accountability.
