Dublin: The Irish Government is assessing contingency measures to provide support to approximately 22,000 Irish citizens in the Middle East, as regional tensions continue to escalate. Authorities have issued safety advice urging Irish citizens in affected areas to remain indoors and follow local guidance.
European media reports suggest there is little prospect of an immediate de-escalation, following recent US-Israeli strikes and retaliatory actions by Iran. Concerns are mounting that the conflict could widen across the region. European economists have also warned of potential impacts on global oil prices and the wider international economy. Meanwhile, the European Union has intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a prolonged war.
At government level, a range of emergency response options is under consideration. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee is scheduled to hold discussions this morning with fellow ministers to review the evolving situation. She has confirmed that the government stands ready to organise chartered flights, if necessary, to assist Irish citizens seeking to return home.
Senior government officials have remained in continuous contact over the past 72 hours to monitor developments in the Gulf region. The matter is expected to feature prominently at today’s Cabinet meeting.
Calls have also been made for coordinated evacuation planning at EU level. Barry Andrews, MEP for Fianna Fáil, urged the Government to prepare for a potential large-scale evacuation in cooperation with European partners, warning that the situation is deteriorating rapidly.
Reports indicate that several EU member states are exploring the possibility of arranging chartered services to airports located outside conflict zones.
The aviation sector across much of the Middle East remains significantly disrupted. Airspace and major airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, among other Gulf hubs, remain closed, leading to widespread cancellations and rescheduling of flights to and from Ireland. As of now, there are no confirmed reports of regular flight services from the Gulf region to Ireland resuming.
