County Clare: Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien has announced a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at helping the public manage energy use more efficiently amid the ongoing global energy crisis.
The minister made the announcement while speaking at the opening of Banner Plaza, highlighting the government’s efforts to support households in reducing fuel consumption and managing rising costs. Minister of State for Transport Seán Canney also reinforced the call for collective action.
The campaign encourages people to adopt practical measures such as walking or cycling where possible, reducing car and air travel, and making greater use of public transport and carpooling. Citizens are also urged to avoid unnecessary electricity usage and consider remote working options where feasible.
Minister O’Brien noted that the government has already taken steps to ease financial pressures, including reductions in excise duties on petrol and diesel. He stated that Ireland’s level of intervention compares favourably with other European countries and confirmed that national fuel reserves remain stable. However, he cautioned against complacency, adding that the situation is being monitored on a daily basis.
“There are currently no supply issues, but this remains a very serious situation,” he said, stressing the importance of safeguarding the economy and society through responsible energy use.
Echoing these concerns, Seán Canney urged the public to be mindful of electricity consumption and to explore alternative, sustainable modes of transport.
The initiative follows guidance from the European Commission, which has encouraged member states to reduce driving and air travel and to promote working from home where possible.
While Ireland’s fuel reserves are currently strong compared to many other countries, the government has emphasised the need for continued vigilance and efficient energy use, warning that the situation could evolve in the coming months.
