Government Launches Search for New Garda Commissioner with €314,000 Salary Cap

Dublin: The government has opened the recruitment process for a new Garda Commissioner, offering a negotiable salary of up to €314,512—the same as outgoing Commissioner Drew Harris. The Public Appointments Service is managing the competition, with applications due by 29 May. Internal candidates face potential pension-related tax liabilities, which may deter them from applying, as reforms recommended in the Butler report have yet to be implemented. The successful candidate will serve a five-year term, leading over 18,000 personnel, and is expected to drive strategic reform and enhance organisational capability. A Cabinet recommendation is expected by late July.
