Dublin: A new affordable housing scheme for essential workers in Google’s Bolands Mills Quarter has attracted an overwhelming response, with over 2,300 applications submitted for just 46 discounted apartments. The initiative aims to address the housing crisis faced by frontline workers such as nurses, Gardaí, and teachers.
However, officials confirmed that only 23% of applications met the eligibility criteria. The selection process will involve a lottery system, with applicants required to demonstrate a connection to the local area and meet specific income, affordability, and family size requirements.
Significant Rent Discounts
The apartments are being offered at rents significantly below market rates, with:
- Two-bedroom units available for €1,710
- Ten three-bedroom apartments priced at €1,850
- One larger three-bedroom unit for €2,100
Google’s Collaboration with Clúid Housing
The project is being managed by Clúid Housing, a non-profit housing association, which secured the lease through a competitive tender process. Google transferred the 46 apartments to Clúid under a 25-year lease for a nominal fee.
Clúid’s Chief Commercial Officer, Aibhlin O’Connor, described the response as exceptional and expressed interest in partnering with other corporations to introduce more affordable rental homes to the market.
The Bolands Mills Quarter holds significant historical importance. During the 1916 Easter Rising, rebel forces occupied the site, with the nearby Bolands Bakery serving as the headquarters of the 3rd Battalion of Irish Volunteers, led by Éamon de Valera.
Google acquired Bolands Mills in 2018 and has since restored the historic Flour Mills building. The first phase of the development commenced in September 2023.
Application Deadline
Applications for the scheme remain open until March 6, offering a rare opportunity for essential workers to secure affordable accommodation in the heart of Dublin.
