Dublin: A historic Muslim Muharram procession is set to take place in Dublin city centre today, marking a significant moment of faith and unity for Ireland’s Muslim community. Hundreds are expected to march along O’Connell Street toward the GPO, one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks, in commemoration of Muharram—the first month of the Islamic calendar—and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, a central figure in Islamic history.
Participants, many dressed in black as a sign of mourning, will carry banners inscribed with religious messages and pause intermittently for prayers and devotional rituals. The atmosphere will be enriched by traditional drumming and chants, drawing both worshippers and onlookers to the heart of the city.
Organiser Imam Ali Raza described the procession as “a spiritual journey honouring sacrifice, justice, and the enduring stand against oppression.” He noted that the event underscores the richness of Ireland’s multicultural fabric and serves as a platform to encourage mutual understanding, respect, and intercultural dialogue.
While the event has been welcomed by many as a positive expression of Ireland’s growing diversity, it has also drawn criticism from some quarters online. Detractors have questioned the choice of the GPO as the procession’s endpoint, suggesting it could be seen as a symbolic encroachment on Irish national identity. Some critics have also pointed to perceived inconsistencies in how public religious events are permitted, citing the restriction of Christian ceremonies such as the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week in previous years.
