Dublin: Homelessness in Ireland has reached a record high, with 15,199 people accessing emergency accommodation in November, according to the Department of Housing. This marks an increase of 233 from the previous month. Among them were 4,658 children, up by 13 from October.
In Dublin, 1,524 families relied on emergency accommodation, 834 of whom were single-parent households. Nationwide, 2,168 families accessed such services, including 1,252 single-parent families.
Focus Ireland has urged swift government action, emphasising that housing supply alone cannot resolve the crisis. The charity highlighted the urgent need for targeted support and rapid construction of social and affordable housing.
The Dublin Region Homeless Executive’s Winter Count reported 134 rough sleepers, a rise of 16 compared to last year, with 43% living in tents. Dublin Simon Community has called for increased funding for preventative measures and tailored support for those experiencing homelessness.
CEO Catherine Kenny expressed alarm over rising rough sleeping numbers, particularly during severe cold weather, stressing the urgent need to address the growing crisis.
