Dublin: The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is calling on political parties to back new legislation that would require social media platforms to deactivate recommender algorithms for child users. Introduced by People Before Profit, the bill also proposes that adults must opt in to algorithmic content based on profiling or sensitive data.
The move follows research by DCU’s Anti-Bullying Centre, which found that platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts quickly expose young male users to misogynistic and extremist content. ICCL’s Dr. Johnny Ryan warned of the psychological risks, citing Meta data showing that 64% of extremist group joins stemmed from platform recommendations. Dr. Ryan criticised weak enforcement of GDPR and urged the EU to take stronger action.
