Goa: A 31-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Irish woman Danielle McLaughlin in Canacona, Goa.
The District and Sessions Court in South Goa found Vikat Bhagat guilty last Friday, delivering the verdict after years of delays. The sentence was officially pronounced this morning.
Danielle’s Tragic End in Goa
Danielle McLaughlin, a 28-year-old from Buncrana, Donegal, was on a two-week visit to India when she was brutally murdered. Bhagat, who had pretended to be a friend, was later found guilty of her rape and murder.
Her body was discovered in a remote field near Canacona, a popular coastal area in Goa. Danielle had been in India celebrating Holi, the country’s vibrant spring festival, just days after her 28th birthday. A long-time admirer of India, she had previously volunteered at an orphanage and had returned to further explore yoga and Indian culture.
Danielle’s Family Commends Indian Justice System
Following the verdict, Danielle’s mother, Andrea Brannigan, expressed both gratitude and sorrow, stating:
“We have received justice from India, but it will never bring my daughter back.”
Andrea recounted that her last conversation with Danielle was on the day of her murder.
“That day, she told me, ‘I’m with my friend.’ And that friend was the one who killed her.”
Danielle had arrived in Goa on Sunday, March 12, 2017. By March 13, she was dissatisfied with her accommodation and had reached out to Bhagat for assistance in finding a better place to stay. Tragically, she never had the chance to do so.
The trial faced numerous delays, with over 250 court hearings held. Some sessions lasted only 30 minutes, while others were postponed due to Bhagat’s absence. Despite these setbacks, Danielle’s family remained determined to see justice served.
A Memorial in Danielle’s Honour
Before leaving India, Danielle’s mother, sister Jolene McLoughlin Brannigan, and best friend Emma Louise McMenamin visited the site where she was murdered.
A memorial has since been erected, transforming the location into a peaceful place of remembrance.
“They have made it beautiful. It’s no longer a place of tragedy, but one of quiet reflection. Danielle would have loved that the locals took the time to honour her memory,” said Jolene McLoughlin Brannigan.
Jolene added that, while no punishment can undo their loss, the life sentence brings a degree of comfort to their grieving family.
“We are grateful to the Indian justice system and to everyone in Goa who stood by us. The court ensured that Danielle’s voice was heard and that her life mattered. For that, we will always be thankful,” she said.
