Dublin: A Dublin court has ordered the deportation of a 26-year-old Indian man, Visakh Rajesh Leela, following his conviction for attempting to abduct a child. Judge Martin Nolan of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court ruled that Rajesh must leave Ireland within two weeks and is prohibited from returning to the country for a period of ten years.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on September 4, 2024, during a party at an apartment complex in North Dublin. According to court proceedings, Rajesh—who was reportedly heavily intoxicated—attempted to abduct a five-year-old boy who was playing outside the building. When the child resisted, Rajesh allegedly used physical force. The child’s sister intervened and successfully pulled her brother away from him.
CCTV footage capturing the incident was reviewed by the court. The children’s parents promptly alerted security personnel and notified An Garda Síochána. Rajesh was detained shortly after, when party organisers called him back to the apartment and handed him over to authorities. He remained in custody for three months following his arrest.
At the time of the incident, Rajesh was a postgraduate student pursuing a master’s degree in marketing, having arrived in Ireland just ten months earlier. His legal counsel argued that the offence was the result of excessive alcohol consumption, asserting that Rajesh rarely consumed alcohol, had blacked out, and believed the children were his relatives.
Despite the defence’s explanation and the absence of a prior criminal record, the court emphasised the gravity of crimes involving children. Judge Nolan noted the seriousness of the offence but ultimately decided to suspend the three-year prison sentence in full, contingent on Rajesh’s immediate departure from Ireland.
