Dublin: Ireland has emerged as one of the fastest-growing study destinations for Indian students, according to a new survey conducted among students, parents, and education counsellors across India. The study reports a 38% increase in interest among Indian students choosing Ireland for higher education.
The surge is attributed to Ireland’s efforts to align with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) and University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines — particularly in areas promoting student exchange programmes, international collaboration, and the establishment of foreign university campuses in India.
Steady Growth in Enrolments
Ireland’s educational engagement with India began modestly, with only 700 Indian students in 2013. A decade later, enrolments surpassed 9,000 in the 2023–24 academic year, marking a 120% increase over five years.
Despite a 15% decline in India’s overall outbound student mobility in 2024, interest in Ireland rose by 38%, underscoring its growing appeal among Indian families.
The study notes that this growth is not primarily driven by marketing campaigns but by positive word-of-mouth, alumni experiences, and trusted counsellor recommendations. Families increasingly view Ireland as a destination that offers both academic excellence and a high quality of life.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
Six Irish universities have been ranked among the world’s top institutions, reinforcing the country’s strong reputation for STEM, artificial intelligence, sustainability, data science, and cybersecurity programs. The report highlights that Ireland’s focus on innovation and research-led education is a major draw for Indian students.
Affordability and Career Opportunities
Ireland also offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional study destinations such as the US and UK, with tuition and living expenses 30–40% lower on average.
One-year master’s programmes save both time and money, providing students with a faster route to employment.
Job prospects remain a major attraction — 80% of international graduates secure employment within nine months of completing their studies. Ireland is home to over 1,800 multinational companies, including global leaders such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Pfizer, offering robust career opportunities in high-demand sectors.
Safety and Quality of Life
Ranked as the third-safest country in the world, Ireland is also home to a vibrant Indian community of over 60,000 residents. The study observes that while isolated incidents of violence have drawn attention, they are widely regarded as temporary and uncharacteristic of Irish society.
Growing Interest Beyond Postgraduate Studies
The report highlights a noticeable increase in Indian students opting for undergraduate and foundation-level programmes in Ireland. Students from cities such as Coimbatore, Guwahati, and Kochi are increasingly choosing Ireland, often supported by education loans and scholarship schemes.
According to the study, today’s Indian students prioritise employability, post-study work opportunities, affordability, and return on investment over mere institutional prestige.
Peer recommendations, alumni testimonials, and counsellor guidance continue to play a decisive role in shaping choices.
