Dublin: Intel has announced a €5 billion investment in its Leixlip campus in Co Kildare, providing a major boost to Ireland’s technology sector as the company seeks to strengthen its operations despite recent global restructuring and job cuts.
The investment is expected to support hundreds of permanent high-skilled jobs while creating additional opportunities across the engineering, manufacturing and supply chain sectors.
Focus on Expanding Existing Facilities
Rather than constructing a new fabrication plant, Intel will use the investment to significantly enhance the capacity of its existing semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Leixlip.
The project includes the installation of advanced manufacturing equipment and the development of an automated transport system linking various production areas across the campus.
Work on the project began this year and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2027.
Intel said the investment is driven by increasing global demand for semiconductors used in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
The upgraded facility will manufacture Intel Xeon 6 processors and future generations of Xeon server processors. Part of the funding will also be directed towards research and development as well as advanced training programmes for employees.
Intel currently employs around 4,900 people in Ireland and has invested more than €30 billion in the country since establishing operations in 1989.
The latest investment announcement is particularly significant given Intel’s recent global cost-cutting measures and workforce reductions, including restructuring affecting its Irish operations.
The decision signals the company’s intention to strengthen, rather than scale back, its manufacturing presence in Ireland.
High-Skilled Employment Opportunities
While the investment is expected to generate new employment, Intel indicated that the majority of opportunities will be concentrated in specialist areas such as semiconductor engineering, chip manufacturing, equipment installation and technical maintenance, rather than large-scale general recruitment.
The project is also expected to provide indirect economic benefits for construction firms, equipment suppliers, local manufacturers and businesses supporting the technology sector.
Strengthening Ireland’s Position in Semiconductor Manufacturing
The investment forms part of Intel’s broader strategy to expand semiconductor production in Europe amid growing global demand for advanced chips.
The government has welcomed the announcement as a strong endorsement of Ireland’s highly skilled workforce, advanced manufacturing capabilities and stable business environment.
The €5 billion investment is regarded as a significant milestone for both Intel’s long-term recovery strategy and Ireland’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading European hub for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technology.
