Dublin: Fianna Fáil is grappling with internal divisions over the election of the next Speaker, a dispute that threatens to overshadow the party’s recent electoral success as the largest party in the Dáil. The contention surrounding the position not only highlights fractures within the party but also poses challenges for party leader Micheál Martin as he faces the daunting task of distributing ministerial positions to satisfy competing factions.
If party member Verona Murphy fails to secure sufficient support for the Speaker role, Fianna Fáil may be forced to nominate another candidate from within the party, creating further complications. Reports suggest that Sinn Féin’s Aengus Ó Snodaigh may also contest the Speaker position, adding an external dimension to the challenge.
Independent TD Verona Murphy, who has the backing of the Independent TDs aligned with the coalition, is lobbying for the Speaker post. However, this demand has not gained consensus within Fianna Fáil’s parliamentary party. A faction of senior party members has expressed opposition, favouring Cork North West TD Michael Moynihan for the role. This group seeks to block the candidacy of outgoing Speaker Seán Ó Fearghaíl and long-serving TD John McGuinness.
Moynihan, however, has yet to file his nomination, with the deadline set for 6 PM on Tuesday. Reports indicate he currently has the support of 16 Fianna Fáil TDs. Meanwhile, Michael Lowry, leader of the Regional Independent Group, is expected to nominate Murphy for Speaker.
Tensions within the coalition extend beyond Fianna Fáil. Fine Gael, which has previously clashed with Murphy—particularly during the 2019 Wexford by-election—is reportedly divided on whether to support her candidacy. Despite this history, some believe Fine Gael may ultimately back Murphy in the interest of coalition unity.
Both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are working to ensure that the ongoing dispute over the Speaker’s role does not derail cabinet formation talks. However, the conflict remains a significant challenge for Martin as he attempts to navigate competing interests within the coalition and his party.
