Dublin – Ireland has paid a solemn and heartfelt farewell to Garda Kevin Flatley (49), who tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident while on duty. A veteran officer of 26 years, Garda Flatley was remembered for his unwavering dedication and service to the nation. He was laid to rest at Newcastle Cemetery, Dublin, following a state-attended funeral that reflected the high regard in which he was held.
A native of Newcastle, Dublin, Garda Flatley had served with distinction in the Roads Policing Unit of the Dublin Metropolitan Region since 2018. His death prompted a national outpouring of grief, with tributes from the highest levels of government and law enforcement.
Among those in attendance at the funeral Mass at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Balbriggan were President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, and other senior government officials. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, alongside hundreds of uniformed Gardaí, also took part in the funeral procession. Representatives from the Irish Defence Forces, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and US Customs officers stationed in Ireland were also present, underscoring the breadth of respect for Garda Flatley.
The funeral began with a moving tribute as the hearse arrived at the church, escorted by Gardaí from the Roads Policing Unit. A guard of honour was formed, and two Gardaí led the cortege—one bearing the Irish national flag, the other the An Garda Síochána flag. On the coffin, Gardaí laid Garda Flatley’s hat, gloves, and the national flag—symbols of his commitment and sacrifice. His wife, Una, and daughters Iofan and Erin were visibly moved as they bore witness to the tribute.
Father Dan Joe O’Mahony, who presided over the service, spoke of Garda Flatley as a man of honour, deeply respected by his colleagues and community. He described him as someone who never wavered in fulfilling his duty. The grief evident among the Gardaí, he noted, spoke volumes about Kevin’s character and integrity.
To accommodate the large turnout, the ceremony was broadcast on large screens in the church car park, allowing the public to participate in mourning. At the conclusion of the service, members of the Garda Ceremonial Unit removed the Irish tricolour from the coffin, and Garda Flatley’s gloves and cap were respectfully presented to his family.
In a final tribute, O’Dwyer’s GAA Club, where Garda Flatley had been an active member, draped their club flag over the coffin. Following Holy Communion, Garda Flatley was interred at Newcastle Cemetery, closing a poignant chapter in the life of a man remembered as a devoted public servant and a cherished family man.
