Ireland Braces for Arctic Blast, Snow, and Sub-Zero Temperatures

Dublin: Ireland is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures as an Arctic air stream moves across the country, according to Met Éireann. The national forecaster predicts cold and unsettled conditions to persist throughout the week, accompanied by heavy rain and snowfall in some areas.

Monday: Heavy Rain and Snow
Low-pressure systems will bring ‘heavy rainfall’ to many parts of the country on Monday. Snow is expected to fall across northern mountain ranges. Daytime temperatures will range from 4°C to 12°C, with moderate to strong winds, particularly along coastal areas.

By Monday night, temperatures are forecast to plummet to between -3°C and 2°C, with snowfall likely in northern regions. Winds will remain brisk, contributing to the frigid conditions.

Tuesday to Friday: Prolonged Cold Spell
The cold weather will continue through the rest of the week, with a very cold front dominating the atmosphere over Ireland. Key highlights include:
– Snow and wintry showers: Heavy snowfall is anticipated, especially at higher altitudes, with nighttime accumulation expected to reach significant levels in some areas.
– Daytime temperatures: Ranging between 3°C and 6°C.
– Nighttime temperatures: Falling as low as -4°C.
– Strong winds: Moderate to strong winds, particularly in the north and northwest, will exacerbate the cold. Coastal regions are likely to experience stronger gusts.

Connacht and Ulster will see occasional rainfall, with snow blanketing the hills and more widespread snowfall during the nights.

Weekend Outlook: Uncertainty Remains
While the forecast for the weekend remains uncertain, Met Éireann suggests that the ‘cold, wet, and windy conditions’ are likely to persist. Snowfall could reach depths of up to ’15cm’ in some areas, prompting weather forecasters to issue warnings for hazardous travel conditions.

Residents are advised to prepare for ‘dangerous driving conditions’ and disruptions, particularly in regions expected to experience heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
