Dublin: Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to disrupt travel across parts of Ireland on the final day of the Bank Holiday weekend, with yellow weather warnings issued for several counties.
A yellow rain warning is in place for Cork and Kerry from 1am to 9am on Monday, with heavy rainfall expected to cause localised flooding and travel disruption.
Further rain expected in the evening
Conditions are expected to deteriorate again later in the day. According to an update issued by Met Éireann at 6.13am, a second yellow rain warning for Cork and Kerry will take effect from 4pm to 10pm on Monday.
The weather service has warned of possible flash flooding and disruption to outdoor activities and events.
Wind warnings issued for 11 counties
A yellow wind warning has also been issued for Carlow, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Mayo, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow from 5pm until midnight.
Strong southerly to south-westerly winds could bring down trees and branches and send unsecured objects flying. Motorists and cyclists have been advised to take extra care, while large waves are possible along coastal areas.
Travellers urged to take precautions
The warnings come as many people prepare to return home at the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Authorities have advised travellers to allow extra time for their journeys and avoid driving through flooded roads.
Residents have also been urged to secure garden furniture, bins and other loose items outside their homes ahead of the expected strong winds.
Meanwhile, Cork County Council has cancelled the ‘Malloween’ family event scheduled for Monday at Mallow Castle because of the adverse weather forecast.
The council said the decision was taken in the interest of public safety.
