Dublin: A memorial service commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 disaster — one of the world’s worst terrorist attacks — was held in Ahakista, County Cork. The solemn event honoured the 329 lives lost when the aircraft exploded off the Irish coast on June 23, 1985, en route from Toronto to Mumbai.
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin attended the ceremony alongside several dignitaries. India was represented by a seven-member delegation led by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri. Canadian Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree and Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra, also participated in the tribute.
Organised jointly by Cork County Council and the governments of India and Ireland, the memorial featured interfaith prayers, a moment of silence, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the iconic sundial located in the Ahakista Memorial Garden. The garden was established to honour the victims of Flight 182, most of whom were Canadian citizens of Indian descent.
For the past four decades, this annual remembrance has served as a powerful symbol of international solidarity in the global fight against terrorism. In recent years, the event has been coordinated collaboratively by the governments of Ireland, India, and Canada, as well as families of the victims, who have remained united in their call for justice and remembrance.
