Dublin: Ireland has experienced one of its wettest winters on record, with data from four major weather stations indicating rainfall levels at 111% above the seasonal average. According to meteorologist Paul Moore, this marks the highest winter rainfall figure ever recorded across those monitoring stations.
While rainfall patterns varied regionally, most stations reported above-average precipitation. The south and eastern parts of the Midlands recorded significantly heavier rainfall than the north-west. Locations in the north-west, including Malin Head and Belmullet, received just 79% and 80% of their long-term average rainfall, respectively.
In contrast, eastern monitoring stations — including Phoenix Park, Dublin Airport and Dunsany — recorded exceptionally high precipitation levels. Stations in Dublin and Johnstown Castle reported rainfall exceeding 170% of normal levels.
Moore noted that this winter is shaping up to be record-breaking across all four key stations. So far this year, Valentia Observatory has recorded rainfall every day. Most stations have experienced more than 60 days of rainfall, with 12 stations reporting over 70 wet days during the winter period.
Forecasters have indicated that further rainfall is expected on Sunday and Monday. Met Éireann has projected that rainfall levels in the west next week will remain slightly above the March average.
New Localised Weather Warning System
Met Éireann also confirmed that a new localised weather warning system is expected to be introduced later this year, replacing the existing county-wide alert model.
Under the revised system, warnings will be issued using map-based polygons to highlight specific affected areas, rather than entire counties. The approach is intended to provide clearer guidance to communities at risk and enable authorities to respond more efficiently.
A spokesperson said the reforms form part of Met Éireann’s broader strategy to enhance weather services and improve public safety across Ireland.
