Dublin: The Met Office has confirmed that rainfall has been recorded somewhere in Ireland on every day so far this year. However, officials clarified that this does not mean it rained in every region each day, but that measurable rainfall occurred in parts of the country throughout the period.
According to data from the Valentia Observatory in Co. Kerry, 318.1 millimetres of rain were recorded over a 56-day period from January 1 to February 24, 2026. Meteorologists noted that most areas experienced at least some rainfall each day during that timeframe — marking an unprecedented concentration of consecutive wet days in the country’s recorded history.
The highest rainfall total during the same period was registered at Cork Airport, where 323 millimetres of rain were recorded.
Weather experts attribute the persistent rainfall pattern to the continued influence of the Atlantic Ocean and a succession of winter low-pressure systems moving across the region.
Further rainfall has been forecast nationwide for today and tomorrow, with heavy downpours and potential flooding risks identified for the Midlands and Dublin areas.
While the sustained rainfall has helped replenish reservoirs and water bodies and provided much-needed relief for the agricultural sector, it has also disrupted transport services and posed challenges for construction activity in several regions.
