Dublin: Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris is set to sign Ireland up to the EU’s new Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, aiming to accelerate the country’s acquisition of key defence systems.
The move will streamline procurement, enabling faster access to capabilities such as sonar, air defence, cyber systems, and artillery. Currently, such acquisitions can take up to two years.
SAFE, which came into force last month, supports urgent defence investments and joint acquisitions across member states through financial aid and exemptions from standard procurement rules.
The decision follows growing EU concerns over regional security and reduced reliance on external defence support, particularly in light of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
