Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme Hits 1.6 Billion Containers Returned

Dublin: Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme has marked a major environmental milestone, with over 1.6 billion bottles and cans returned since its launch in February 2024. The initiative, operated by Re-turn, has driven the national recycling rate for drinks containers from 49% to 91% in just 17 months.

Minister Darragh O’Brien TD, alongside Re-turn Chair Tony Keohane and CEO Ciaran Foley, praised the scheme’s success, highlighting its impact on reducing litter and advancing climate goals. Foley credited the public’s strong participation and cross-sector collaboration for the rapid progress.

The scheme incentivises consumers to return plastic bottles and aluminium cans by offering a small deposit refund, promoting a circular economy. Re-turn plans to build on this momentum with further innovations and public engagement efforts.
