Dublin: Alcohol consumption among Irish adults fell by 4.5% in 2024, continuing a 25-year downward trend, according to a report commissioned by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI). The average adult consumed 9.49 litres of pure alcohol, a 34.3% decline since 2001. Beer remains the most consumed beverage at 43% market share, followed by wine at 28%.
DIGI says the data confirms a shift toward more moderate drinking, aligning Ireland with average EU alcohol consumption levels. The group is calling for a 10% excise duty cut in the upcoming budget to support struggling rural pubs and hospitality businesses.
