Irish Motor Insurance Premiums Surge, Outpacing General Inflation

Dublin: Motor insurance premiums in Ireland are climbing at a rate fifteen times higher than general inflation, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). October marked the fourteenth consecutive month of rising motor premiums, which increased by 11% year-over-year, placing Ireland among the highest rates for car insurance in Europe.

The CSO report also highlights substantial increases in spending on food, entertainment, and holiday packages, fuelling broader concerns about inflation. Without swift intervention from the government, the CSO warns, many citizens could face severe financial hardship. Current inflation levels are reported to be between 20% and 25% above pre-COVID figures and the pre-war economic landscape, largely affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Home insurance rates increased by 7.6% year-over-year, while health insurance premiums rose 10.4%, according to the CSO’s Consumer Price Index. Additionally, there are concerns that a potential second term for Donald Trump as U.S. President could worsen the cost-of-living crisis in Ireland. A potential U.S. reduction in support for Ukraine could also impact global food and energy prices, with further inflationary pressure expected domestically.
