Rome: In a positive development for Indian healthcare professionals, Italy has announced plans to recruit a significant number of foreign health workers, with India set to be a primary source. Italy’s Health Minister Orazio Schillaci confirmed that up to 10,000 positions will soon be available for Indian nurses as part of Italy’s broader effort to address staffing shortages across its healthcare sector.
To qualify for nursing positions in Italy, candidates must hold either a four-year nursing degree or a three-to-three-and-a-half-year diploma in general nursing and midwifery. Italy is focusing on streamlining entry requirements, including plans to establish Italian language learning centres in India to ease the transition for incoming nurses. Recruitment has already begun in select regions, including Lombardy, and positions are open in other countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, Nigeria, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, and Peru.
The Italian government is also revising salary structures to make positions more competitive, particularly in regions like Naples, known for having one of the lowest salary levels in Europe’s healthcare sector. Italy aims to add 50,000 nurses to its workforce by early 2025, a necessary step toward meeting an estimated national need of 65,000 nurses. Currently, Italy’s healthcare system relies on a large contingent of foreign nurses, including approximately 12,000 from Romania, 1,800 each from Albania and India, and 1,500 from Peru.
