Dublin: Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has strongly condemned the recent spate of racist attacks targeting members of the Indian community in Ireland, calling them “completely unacceptable” and contrary to the values of the Republic.
“Attacks on individuals based on racial discrimination have no place in our society. No person of good conscience or sound judgement can tolerate such acts,” the minister said, expressing concern that young people appear to be involved in many of the incidents.
The minister met with representatives of the Federation of Indian Communities in Ireland and the Ireland India Council to address growing concerns about safety. His intervention comes amid criticism directed at the Department of Justice for what community leaders described as a slow response despite repeated reports of abuse and assaults.
Garda Response and Community Engagement
Garda Juvenile Liaison Officers have been tasked with investigating the incidents, working closely with community organisations and youth groups to prevent further violence. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has also taken measures to reassure and support the Indian community, including meeting with the Indian Ambassador to Ireland.
Meetings have already been convened in several locations, including Galway, to discuss security measures. Senior Garda officers are being assigned to ensure all cases of violence are investigated without delay.
No Leniency for Perpetrators
Minister O’Callaghan emphasised that the recent amendments to the Criminal Justice (Hate Crimes) Act 2024 provide for tougher penalties in hate-motivated offences. “There will be no leniency towards those responsible,” he stated, adding that investigation reports are expected to be delivered promptly.
The Minister reiterated that Ireland’s commitment to diversity and inclusion must be upheld and that the authorities will act decisively to protect all communities from racially motivated violence.
