Dublin: A man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing spree that left three people injured in the Stoneybatter area of Dublin, causing widespread alarm among local residents. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. last day, with the suspect attacking individuals at multiple locations, including Oxmantown Road and Niall Street.
Details of the Incident
The 20-year-old suspect allegedly targeted three men, aged between 20 and 40, in separate assaults within the residential neighbourhood. All victims were swiftly transported to the hospital by ambulance. According to Gardaí, two individuals sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the third suffered minor wounds.
Authorities described the injuries as “brutal,” underscoring the severity of the attacks. The suspect is currently in Garda custody and is being questioned at a local station as part of an ongoing investigation.
Community Reaction and Garda Response
The attacks caused panic among residents, prompting Gardaí to issue advisories for locals to lock their doors and remain indoors until the situation was under control. Gardaí responded promptly, securing the area and launching an immediate investigation.
Local Fine Gael Councillor Ray McAdam praised the swift response of law enforcement, stating, “The timely intervention of Gardaí undoubtedly prevented further harm.”
Local TD Gary Gannon expressed concern over ongoing safety issues in the area, noting that residents had previously raised security concerns with both Gardaí and the local council. “Community meetings have been held to address these issues, with repeated calls for an increased Garda presence in vulnerable areas,” Gannon said.
Sinn Féin Leader and Opposition Leader Mary Lou McDonald condemned the violence, describing the incident as “shocking.” She commended the Gardaí for their effective handling of the situation, saying, “The Gardaí acted swiftly and professionally, and I commend their efforts.”
