Carlow: A man has died following a shooting incident at the Tesco supermarket in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow, on Sunday evening. A young girl sustained minor injuries during the incident, which occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. The precise circumstances surrounding the event remain under investigation.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with ambulance personnel administering first aid to the injured child before accompanying her to her family home. Gardaí have confirmed that the girl’s injuries are non-life-threatening, though the exact nature of how she was injured is still unclear.
The shopping centre was evacuated and closed immediately following the incident. Gardaí have confirmed that heightened security measures were put in place, and armed support units remained on site overnight to ensure public safety.
Following concerns that the deceased may have been in possession of additional explosive materials, the Army Bomb Disposal Team was deployed to the scene as a precautionary measure.
Gardaí have urged the public to refrain from sharing video footage of the incident on social media. Instead, they request that any recordings or relevant information be submitted directly to Carlow Garda Station at 059-9136620 or via the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
In an official statement, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was “shocked” by the events in Carlow and called on anyone with information to assist Gardaí in their ongoing investigation. Tánaiste Simon Harris also expressed concern and confirmed that he had spoken with Lieutenant General Rosa Mulcahy, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, regarding the matter.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan described the shooting as a deeply troubling incident, emphasising that such violence is “wholly unacceptable and should never occur in our communities.”
The investigation remains active, and Gardaí continue to assess all available evidence.
