Cork: A jury at Cork Central Criminal Court has found Regin Rajan (43) guilty of the murder of his wife, Deepa Dinamani (38), following a fatal stabbing during a domestic dispute. The verdict was reached unanimously by a jury of seven women and five men after more than five hours of deliberation.
Justice Siobhán Lankford presided over the case and remanded Rajan in custody until May 2, when sentencing will be delivered. The court confirmed that Deepa’s only brother will be given the opportunity to attend the hearing and deliver a victim impact statement.
The tragic incident occurred on July 14, 2023, at the couple’s residence in Wilton, Cork City, where Deepa sustained a fatal stab wound to the neck.
Originally from India, Deepa Dinamani, a chartered accountant, had moved to Cork in March 2023 with her husband and their five-year-old son. While the couple had relocated together, the court heard that their marriage was under significant strain, and Deepa was preparing to initiate divorce proceedings at the time of her death.
Rajan had claimed that the stabbing occurred accidentally during a struggle over a knife, which he said Deepa had picked up during an argument concerning his passport, which she had withheld. He testified that Deepa told him to leave the room, but when he refused, a confrontation ensued.
He alleged that Deepa had earlier purchased the knife, and during the altercation, it ended up on her bedside table. Rajan claimed that in the midst of a struggle, the knife unintentionally pierced her neck. He maintained that her death was not intentional and said he was in shock, which is why he did not immediately call emergency services or take her to the hospital. However, he did eventually place a 999 call reporting the incident. The jury rejected Rajan’s version of events, finding him guilty of murder.
