Dublin: Met Éireann has warned motorists to exercise extreme caution as heavy rain is forecast to affect large parts of the country this weekend. An orange weather alert for persistent rainfall has been issued for Cork and Kerry, in effect from 3:00am on Sunday until 6:00pm.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has advised drivers to check local traffic and weather updates before travelling and to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions, including poor visibility and surface water.
A yellow rain warning is also in place for much of the west coast, including Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal and Connacht, until midnight on Sunday. In addition, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford will be under a yellow alert from midnight on Sunday until 3:00am on Monday. A separate yellow warning applies across Northern Ireland on both Sunday and Monday.
The RSA cautioned that heavy rainfall, particularly in higher-altitude areas, could lead to river flooding and localised surface water accumulation. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and avoid driving through floodwaters, as travel conditions are expected to be difficult in several regions.
