Dublin: Ireland is set for a sharp drop in temperatures this weekend, with Met Éireann warning of freezing conditions and overnight lows of up to –4°C.
The national forecaster said Friday night will be particularly bitter, with snow and icy conditions developing as temperatures fall well below freezing. The cold spell is expected to bring a wintry end to the week.
Rain and strong winds are forecast for most areas today and Thursday, with a risk of heavy downpours and spot flooding. Daytime temperatures will range between 3°C and 9°C. As northerly winds ease on Thursday night, temperatures will drop to between –3°C and 2°C, leading to the formation of frost and ice, along with possible snowfall.
Friday will begin with snow and icy patches in many areas. While conditions are expected to be largely dry with spells of sunshine, isolated showers may occur in eastern and northern parts of the country, along with the possibility of occasional wintry showers. Daytime highs will remain low, between 3°C and 6°C, before falling to –4°C overnight.
Saturday is expected to start with widespread sunshine, but snow, frost and bitterly cold conditions will persist throughout the day. By evening, wet and windy weather will move eastwards, with a chance of further snowfall overnight. Widespread frost and icy conditions are likely on Saturday night.
Met Éireann said the cold spell is expected to ease gradually over the weekend, although there remains some uncertainty regarding conditions next week. Weather charts indicate a potential return of similarly cold conditions around Tuesday, February 17.
Sunday will be moderately windy with scattered showers, particularly affecting parts of Munster and Leinster. Atlantic coastal counties may also experience showers, although temperatures are forecast to recover slightly, with highs ranging from 9°C to 11°C in the west.
