Cork: The trial of Regin Rajan (43), accused of murdering his wife, Deepa Dinamani (38), at their home in Cardinal Court, Wilton, Cork, is ongoing at the Central Criminal Court. Proceedings will resume on Monday at 2 PM, presided over by Justice Lankford and a 12-member jury.
Deepa was discovered dead in a pool of blood in her bedroom on July 14, 2023. Testimonies from her brother, Ullas Dinamani, and Rajani Jose, a Malayali nurse who lived in the couple’s rented home, were presented in court. Ullas gave his evidence via video link.
Brother’s Testimony: Deepa Wanted a Divorce
Ullas Dinamani testified that Deepa and Regin had longstanding marital issues. The couple moved to Ireland with their five-year-old son in March 2023, but their relationship continued to deteriorate.
- Deepa had expressed her desire for a divorce, but Regin refused to accept it.
- She suggested marriage counselling and even arranged for Regin to see a therapist, covering the expenses herself.
- Deepa was described as a loving mother, sister, and friend. She maintained a strong social circle and was well regarded at her workplace.
Under cross-examination by Regin Rajan’s lawyer, Brian McInerney, Ullas confirmed that Deepa never expressed fear of her husband.
Housemate’s Testimony: Regin Sought Deepa’s Affection
Rajani Jose, a nurse at Cork University Hospital (CUH), also provided testimony, stating:
- Regin consistently tried to make Deepa happy, but she remained indifferent to him.
- Deepa was intelligent, fluent in English, and highly capable, but she and Regin did not engage socially as part of the Indian community.
- The couple rarely spent time together as a family and slept in separate bedrooms.
McInerney highlighted that marriage and family are central to Indian culture and emphasised that divorce is considered a deeply personal decision in India.
Regin Rajan’s Statements to Gardaí
According to Garda Alan Johnson, Regin told investigators:
- He had been married for eight years and had always enjoyed fatherhood.
- He married for love and maintained a good relationship with his in-laws.
- He had been suffering from depression but was not taking medication.
- Being unemployed in Ireland was difficult for him, and he was actively seeking work.
The trial remains ongoing.
