Dublin: New data from the HSE reveals that 487,792 antidepressant prescriptions were issued to adults in Ireland in 2024. The majority—362,070—were dispensed under the General Medical Services (GMS) scheme, which supports individuals facing financial hardship. An additional 120,360 prescriptions were covered by the Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS), and 5,362 were issued through the Long-Term Illness (LTI) scheme.
In response, the Department of Health highlighted a record €1.5 billion allocation for mental health services in 2025—a 44% increase since 2020. Funding will support national strategies such as “Sharing the Vision” and “Connecting for Life”, with a focus on early intervention, youth mental health, and the expansion of clinical programmes addressing ADHD, eating disorders, dual diagnosis, and more.
Additional resources have also been allocated to CAMHS and the Counselling in Primary Care (CIPC) initiative as part of Budget 2025.
