Dublin: New Garda data reveals that 5,848 drivers were fined in 2024 for not wearing seatbelts, with Galway and Kerry recording spikes of 95% and 72%, respectively.
Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú called the figures “truly shocking,” noting that seatbelt laws have been in place since 1979. She urged the government to fast-track plans for automated road safety cameras to detect mobile phone use and seatbelt violations.
The data also shows higher non-compliance during summer months. Ní Mhurchú stressed the need for parental vigilance, citing RSA research indicating that 80% of children are not properly restrained in vehicles.
