Dublin: Anyone who has been legally resident in Ireland for at least four years, regardless of citizenship, is now eligible to apply to join An Garda Síochána. Under the revised criteria, applicants must also have lived in Ireland for the 12 months immediately prior to applying.
The latest recruitment campaign officially opened yesterday and will run until 3 p.m. on Thursday, 9 October 2025. Applications can be submitted through the Public Appointments Service website, Public Jobs.i.e., eligible candidates must be between 18 and 49 years of age.
The recruitment drive was announced by Minister Jim O’Callaghan and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly at the National Ploughing Championships, where they confirmed that new intakes are now being processed at the Garda College every 11–12 weeks. Since the post-Covid recruitment campaign began in December 2022, more than 2,000 trainees have entered the college, with over 1,400 probationary Gardaí currently in service.
Training and Benefits
- Training at the Garda College is fully funded, with trainees receiving a weekly salary of €354 during the 36-week programme.
- Trainees are provided with free food and accommodation while in residence.
- Successful candidates will also work towards a Level 7 Bachelor of Arts in Applied Policing, accredited by the University of Limerick.
Career Opportunities
On graduation, Gardaí will receive a starting salary of €38,694, with the potential to earn up to €50,000 annually through core shift allowances and overtime. Recruits will be assigned to a 12-hour core shift roster, and will benefit from secure, full-time employment and a pension.
