One Week Left to Apply for Garda Recruitment

Dublin: There is just one week remaining to apply for a position with An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service. The deadline for applications is Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 3:00 PM. The Gardaí have emphasised that late applications will not be accepted.

An Garda Síochána, a community-focused organisation with over 17,000 personnel, encourages individuals from all backgrounds to apply, reflecting the diversity of Irish society.

Revised Fitness Requirements & Increased Accessibility

Recent changes to the Garda recruitment process aim to attract a wider pool of applicants. Notably, the removal of push-ups and sit-ups from the physical pre-entry test is expected to encourage more candidates to apply.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan played a key role in revising the fitness test. In 2023, before assuming his ministerial role, he personally completed the rigorous pre-entry test—including the now-removed push-ups and sit-ups—at the age of 55. His participation was recorded to demonstrate the test’s difficulty, and the video has since gained traction on social media.

O’Callaghan has prioritised Garda recruitment since taking office, forming a Recruitment and Training Capacity Group to enhance the intake process. This group will evaluate measures to maximise recruitment and ensure efficiency, with findings expected to be reported in the summer.

Recruitment Process & Eligibility

While some physical requirements have been adjusted, the Garda recruitment process remains rigorous. Candidates must complete:

  • Written Application
  • Online Aptitude Tests
  • Interviews
  • Substance Abuse Screening
  • Medical Evaluation
  • Revised Physical Competency Assessment

The Gardaí have stated that the physical assessment now follows best practices and international standards, ensuring all recruits meet essential fitness levels, regardless of age or gender.
