Dublin: Protests and prayer vigils have taken place across Dublin following the death of a 35-year-old Congolese man, Yive Sakila, after an altercation involving private security staff at a department store in the city centre.
Sakila died after being restrained outside Arnotts on Henry Street following an alleged shoplifting incident. According to Gardaí, security personnel intervened after a complaint of attempted theft, during which Sakila is believed to have taken perfume from the store. He then fled the scene and collided with a passer-by, an elderly man in his 80s, who sustained injuries.
Video footage of the incident, widely circulated on social media, appears to show Sakila being held down by security staff for several minutes. He later became unresponsive and was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination and official cause of death are pending, with authorities stating that both medical findings and witness accounts will be central to the investigation.
Public Outcry and Vigils
Members of Dublin’s Congolese community gathered at Henry Street in recent days, lighting candles, laying flowers, and holding prayers in memory of Sakila. Community representatives have called for justice and a full, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Human rights groups, including the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, have raised concerns over the level of force used during the restraint, urging authorities to ensure accountability regardless of whether the force was applied by private security or law enforcement personnel.
Official Response and Investigation
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan described the incident as “deeply distressing” and confirmed that a full investigation is underway. He urged anyone with relevant footage or information to assist authorities.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is also expected to review aspects of the case due to the involvement of security personnel and subsequent police response.
Arnotts expressed condolences to Sakila’s family and said the company is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Prime Minister Micheál Martin has also called for a thorough inquiry, noting growing public concern over the incident. Meanwhile, community groups are planning a larger demonstration outside government buildings later this week, calling for accountability and reform in the use of force during private security interventions.
