Dublin: A new investigative report by Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, has revealed significant shortcomings in resident care across some of the country’s most prominent private nursing home groups. The findings, which highlight chronic staff shortages, inadequate training, and management failures, have raised serious concerns about the standard of elder care being provided.
The investigation focused on Beneavin Manor in Dublin, which currently houses 115 residents. Through the government’s Fair Deal scheme, each resident receives state funding of approximately €1,400 per week, with most also required to make additional family contributions. Despite these substantial payments, RTÉ reports that management in many nursing homes is demonstrating what it describes as a “criminal disregard” for residents’ well-being and safety.
The revelations stem from undercover work carried out by RTÉ journalists who gained employment as carers at Beneavin Manor and The Residence in Portlaoise. Their findings paint a troubling picture of day-to-day conditions within these facilities.
Staff were frequently left without access to basic supplies such as clean cloths, bedsheets, sanitary wipes, and protective gloves. Additionally, employees were reportedly instructed not to use available hoisting equipment—vital for safely assisting residents with mobility issues. Leading geriatrician Dr. Ronan Collins condemned the situation as “deeply alarming”, warning that it amounted to a “life-and-death issue”.
“We must investigate how frontline care staff are being expected to work without even the most essential resources,” Dr. Collins said. “Ireland is facing a serious crisis in care delivery, with workers returning home demoralised and unable to provide the level of attention and dignity our older citizens deserve.”
Following the completion of their undercover work, the RTÉ investigators resigned from their posts and submitted their findings to HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority), which has since launched inquiries into the named nursing homes.
These revelations will be detailed in RTÉ Investigates: Inside Ireland’s Nursing Homes, airing tonight at 9:35 PM on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player.
In the wake of the report, there have been growing calls for reform. Advocates and healthcare professionals are urging government officials, regulatory bodies, and the public to demand greater transparency, improved staffing, and enhanced accountability across Ireland’s nursing home sector.
