Dublin: A series of violent incidents targeting members of the Indian community in recent days has raised alarm, including attacks in typically peaceful areas such as Dun Laoghaire.
In one incident, a young man riding his scooter through Kilbogget Park narrowly escaped after a group attempted to strip him naked and steal his vehicle. The same group later tried to assault three students standing near the Dun Laoghaire DART station. The students ran onto a bus to escape, but the attackers boarded as well. The bus driver was forced to call Gardaí, who removed the group from the vehicle.
Separately, another Indian student was brutally assaulted in Fairview Park on Sunday evening. Traumatised by the attack, he has decided to abandon his studies and return to India, leaving behind both his work and thesis. He has formally requested permission from his university to complete his degree remotely.
The student, who does not wish to be named, said he is now afraid to leave his home. His parents, deeply concerned for his safety, urged him to return. He also expressed disappointment at what he described as the Indian Embassy’s limited response to the incident. His brother reported the attack to the embassy on Sunday and was instructed to send an email detailing the incident, but the family has heard nothing further.
The Fairview Park Attack
The assault occurred at around 5:30 p.m. when three men targeted the student as he walked home. One of the attackers, riding an electric scooter, kicked him in the stomach, knocking him to the ground. As he attempted to get up, two more men approached and began beating him. He was knocked down again, trampled, and struck above the eye with a metal water bottle, causing a deep wound that required eight stitches.
Despite numerous bystanders, no one intervened. Eventually, two teenagers stepped forward to assist, contacting Gardaí, who arranged hospital treatment.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the incident is under investigation and urged anyone with information to contact Clontarf Garda Station at 01 666 4800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
