Dublin: Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon-Galway and party spokesperson on integration, Claire Kerrane, has removed a Facebook post that controversially suggested the deportation of criminal migrants. Kerrane clarified that her post reflected her personal views and did not represent Sinn Féin’s official stance.
The post was made in response to a local resident’s comments expressing concern that Ballaghaderreen, Kerrane’s hometown, was no longer a safe and quiet village. This sentiment emerged after an incident last weekend in Kerrane’s constituency, where a young man was reportedly assaulted, sparking community outcry. Kerrane’s response, intended to address the resident’s concerns, inadvertently fuelled anti-immigrant rhetoric, leading to a flood of negative comments about her hometown. In light of this, Kerrane decided to delete her post.
While Kerrane acknowledged that many people support deporting individuals who come to Ireland and commit crimes, she emphasised that her post should not be interpreted as a call for blanket deportation. Under current Irish law, individuals who commit serious crimes may face deportation to their home country, with exceptions for those residing in Ireland for over ten years or under the age of 18, where removal would only occur in the interest of public safety.
